B5196 mini sample
B5196, has it been giving you a problem? Here's a step by step run through of the twist.
This sample is made from cotton, and is not the complete pattern piece, so the drapey-ness is not present. I'm only showing the twist step.
I'm beginning at step 5, using piece 1,

stitch with right sides together |
Next we stitch the right front edges
A look from the right side of the garment
Everything okay so far, you with me? Sure you are, let's move on...
We're at step 7 on the guide; we are going to slip the left side through the hole that you see from stitching the right fronts together

continue pulling it through the hole |
pull it all the way through

neaten it out, and it looks like this (this is step 7's illustration) |
Now, with right sides together, close up this space, by stitching the 2 left sides together, like you did on the right
Your front should look like this

This is step 8, but from the right side. |
Okay, this is where I couldn't get it right the first 10 times: At step seven where you pull the left side through the hole in the right side (that you just made by putting a seam from the edge to the reinforced area)...stop when half of the short reinforced part (that you did between the dots, but has not been sewn into a seam yet) is above the fabric that you are pulling through and half the reinforced part is below.. THEN you sew the left seam together, making the second hole with the fabric ALREADY IN IT before sewing that second seam.
ReplyDeleteSoooo, my problem was that I didn't know where or when to stop pulling the fabric through. You'd never guess that I have been sewing for more than 50 years :) Everyone gets stumped by something sometime or other. It was my turn. Cheers and a huge thank you to Meg at Butterick.
Thank you for this I just could not follow the instructions. This is excellent and so much easier to follow. Will have this top finished in no time now!
