How does this coat, Vogue Pattern 1216, go??? Oh, Like that.

I think someone needs to help those that have years of experience sewing, but get stuck occasionally on quirpy designs.  So let's begin...(I guess I'm the one)

Our first pattern to visit is V1216, a Lynn Mizono coat.
It's a really cute coat for any season, depending on the fabric you choose.  Anyway, this is to discuss construction, not fabric.

I've heard alot of women stating the pattern doesn't work or look like the picture on the envelope.  WEll I believe you guys are putting the coat on UPSIDE DOWN!  I've made the coat in a mini, and put it on a 20" doll to show the construction is in fact correct, and  how to wear the coat.

We'll pick it up at step 3, where you stitch the side backs at the center back, and your garment should look like this:

Lay your pattern tissue over one side, so you can get a visual for where the BASE OF NECK  is located:

Notice the base of neck is right above the V made when joining the side backs.

Okay, so now we are going to add the center back piece, after ease stitching the sides, between the circles as it states; and we have this:

Okay, so one side is pinned, now pin the other, and stitch.  Your shoulder seams will meet at the large circles:

large circles match at the shoulder seam, pull up the ease to fit

Next you will topstitch the front between the small circles.  Okay your coat is done, of course except for the buttonholes, and buttons.  But you can get that done without me.

So let's put the coat on... oops, I think you have it on the wrong way, it's upside down - it goes like this:

top stitching should be under the collar right at the bustline or there about.
Remember the topstitching you did on the front - between the small circles, is that by your bustline or not?  If not, take it off and turn in the other way. NOW, you have it on right.

Of course it's not a perfect fit on the doll, but you can see how it's worn.  And one more picture to help you out:

Notice where the "V" that was made in step 3 is located, at the top next to the neck, not at the hemline.
This coat is very full in the sleeves, and the shoulder seam is forward,  not on top of the arm as you would think.  A design feature of the pattern.

So there you have it, Vogue 1216, Lynn Mizono Coat all ready for the Fall.  Nice Job!
